What is Neurofeedback?
Neurofeedback is a form of EEG biofeedback, a technology that enables you to alter your brain waves. Neurofeedback is a specialised program that helps treat numerous mental health conditions and also enhances performance.
What is Neurofeedback effective in treating?
There is a significant amount of evidence that has shown that neurofeedback training is effective treatment for numerous mental health conditions including:
Trauma and PTSD
Attention deficit disorder
Insomnia and sleep issues
Anxiety and depression and other mental health condition
Chronic pain issues
Peak performance training
How is it done?
In the first appointment a general assessment is completed along with a mini map. A mini map is EEG reading of your brain, the data is then analysed and along with your assessment and identified areas that you would like addressed, protocols are developed in order to tailor a program to suit your needs.
When completing a neurofeedback session, sensors are attached to your head and ears while you engaging in a program which is continually monitored by the therapist.
How does it work?
Neurofeedback works by sending a signal to the brain, via the computer program the client is engaged in, which in turn helps the brain regulate itself and with sufficient training the brain is able to maintain these changes and improvements.
How many sessions do I need?
How many sessions needed for treatment can vary from person to person, some may need only 20, some may require more treatment sessions than this which depends on the issues being addressed. Most people will see improvements by 5 to 10 sessions. Each appointment should take 50 minutes, this includes preparation time and 30-40 minutes for neurofeedback and time to address and issues or questions that arise from the neurofeedback training.
Counselling is an integral part of my practice in neurofeedback training. I work with focused psychological interventions, including cognitive behavioural therapy, relaxation strategies, skills training, interpersonal therapy, psycho-education and motivational interviewing.
